4. Developing Communicative Skills

Developing the ability to communicate effectively requires more than teaching grammar rules. Teachers need to help students improve their skills by focusing on the four main parts of communicative competence.

Communicative competence has four parts:

* Linguistic competence: this is about knowing grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary of the language.

* Sociolinguistic competence: this means being able to use language in the right way depending on the situation and the people around you.

* Discourse competence: this is the ability to express your ideas clearly and in an order when you are speaking or writing.

* Strategie competence: this involves being able to deal with problems that come up during communication, such as using different words to explain something or using gestures to help get your point across.

When students learn all these parts of competence they will be able to communicate more successfully. In my opinion activities that combine all four parts of competence, in real life situations are the most effective way to learn. This means that communicative activities should include competence and sociolinguistic competence and discourse competence and strategic competence to be really useful.
